Wasatch Rails 2007

Joint Free-Mo Set-Up

November 2nd - 4th, 2007 at the Grand Building at the Utah State Fairpark.

Friday 5:00 - 9:00, Saturday 10:00 - 6:00, and Sunday 10:00 - 4:00.

Utah Free-Mo is excited to share with you information on our next really big event, Wasatch Rails '07. This show is sponsored by the Wasatch Division of the Rocky Mountain Region of the NMRA. The show has a long history. It has been held in its present location, the Grand Building at the Utah State Fair Park, for the past sixteen years. A large number of tables are available for vendors, who come from around the region to participate. In the past the show has attracted several thousand spectators.

This will be the sixth time that Utah Free-Mo has attended Wasatch Rails. Our group was officially formed in March 2002. We are an umbrella group for those building to Free-Mo in Utah. We have set up layouts at several shows during the past several years. More information on these setups, including last year' Wasatch Rails, is located elsewhere on our website. We enjoy the operations aspect of Free-Mo and also the potential for improved scenery. We have a large group of core module locally. Additionally, our group is growing and our members have constructed several new modules which will be debuted at the show.

We are dedicated to maintaining high standards for our modules and trains. One aspect of Free-Mo that we find particularly alluring is the potential to join with other groups and form large layouts. We feel that we have the perfect opportunity to do just that this November in Salt Lake City. We have a strong group of modelers with a core layout of modules. We have a large space open for us at this venue. Once again, our layout at last years show demonstrated the potential of this venue as we assembled our largest layout to date. Building on the success of our multi-group layout in 2005 and 2006, this year we again have commitments from module owners from Free-moLA, NorCal Free-mo, and Colorado Free-mo. We look forward to seeing those who have already expressed interest in Wasatch Rails ’07. We hope that you will accept our invitation to participate in the grand event. Even if you are not able to attend, we hope that this event will encourage all of us to prepare for the next opportunity to join together. We may yet be several years away from the size and scope of FREMO in Europe, but we have to start somewhere, sometime. Why not here and now?

Below you will find more detailed information on this show, our layout plans, the venue, and other information. We hope that you will be able to join us for a fun and exciting weekend. If you are interested in signing up or if you have additional questions please email the Run Chief for this event, Scott Gentry.

Grand Building @ Fair Park

The grand building (above on the right) is one of the largest buildings at the Utah State Fairpark. Our Free-Mo layout will be on the second floor, the Grand Ballroom, (below, click for panoramic view). The room is roughly 13,500 square feet. Setting up on the second floor is facilitated by a large elevator. It is over eight feet long and about 6 foot wide. Also, there are several doors to load/unload from. In fact, the doors to the north side of the building roll open, in the past we have frequently driven a truck or trailer right into the building to load/unload.

The Layout

Below is the layout plan for 2006. To get an idea of what could be done in this space in future years if many Free-Mo groups and individuals decided to participate we drew up a concept drawing using all the Free-Mo modules that we had drawings of this past year.

Directions to Fair Park

The Fairpark is located only minutes from the Salt Lake Airport and downtown Salt Lake City and convenient to I-15, I-215 and I-80 . From I-80 eastbound use Exit 115, North Temple. I-215 use the Redwood Road -Exit 22 (NB) or 22A (SB), then left to North Temple Street, the right to the fairpark. From I-80 westbound and I-15 use the 600 North Exit and head west, follow the signs. For more detailed driving directions from your location to The Utah State Fairpark note this address 155 North 1000 West, Salt Lake City, UT 84116 and go to www.mapquest.com.

Driving to Salt Lake City

As mentioned the Fair Park is conveniently located within a mile of the junction of I-15 and I-80 within minutes of Downtown Salt Lake making it easy to drive to the fair park from all points. For esitmates of driving times and detailed driving times try www.mapquest.com.

Flights

Salt Lake International Airport is a Hub for both Delta and Sky West. Direct flights are available from most points via these two carriers. Virtually every other major airline also has regular flights into Salt LakeAlso, the airport is served by Southwest. Thus, most airlines keep prices low to compete.

Salt Lake City Visitor Information

There are several official website with visitor information. These sites may be helpful if your significant other comes along. There is a lot to see and do in and near downtown Salt Lake. For more information visit these sites.
Salt Lake City Convention and Visitors Bureau
Salt Lake City Government's "Visitor's Guide"
Salt Lake City Utah Tourist and Visitor Information Center

Hotels Rooms

The fair park is located within minutes of downtown and the airport. There are many hotels/motels in the downtown area and west of the airport. Many of these provide shuttle service to the airport and most likely shuttle service to the Fairpark upon request. There are two malls and the Gateway shopping district within downtown. Many restaurants are also within this same area. The Utah Transit Authority's Light Rail line connects many of the hotels, the downtown malls, and The Delta Center/ Gateway Shopping District (including the former Union Pacific Salt Lake depot).

I would recomend you check
HotWire.com , Priceline, or another similar service for discounted room rates. If you book well in advance you can usually get nice rooms in the range of $30-$60. Also, some of our members recomend the Quality Inn. It is located between the fairpark and the airport on the corner of North Temple Street and Redwood road. They are close to both and provide a shuttle service. There are several other national chains in that same area as well as many other hotel and motel rooms scattered across the area within 15 to 20 minutes drive including West Valley (near the ‘E' center), Bountiful, Sandy and Draper.

Parking

Parking for the public is $3.00 per day. Weekend Parking passes, good for the three days of the show, are available for purchase by vendors and layout participants. The cost of the weekend pass is $10 and allows for unlimited entry or "come and go" privilidges. For those who may be interested bringing their RV to the show, the Fair Park has allowed RVs and trailers to be parked outside the Grand Building during the show. If you are interested in hookups, there is a KOA within a mile to the west of the fairgrounds on North Temple Street.

Shipping Modules

For those who are interested in shipping their modules directly to the Grand Building via common carrier, arrangements can be made. The fairpark commonly deals with these requests and will store your shipment at the fairpark and deliver it to the building for setup. Delivery should be scheduled for early in the week of the show. They will also handle the storage and pickup of you return shipment from the fairpark.

American Freight Companies provides discounted shipping rates via most common carriers. They provide free quotes via their website, Freightcenter.com

Set-up Times

The Grand Building will be open for setup starting Thursday afternoon between 2:00 and 9:00. The building will open at 8:00 Friday morning. We have 9 hours available for set up Friday before the show opens to the public at 5:00 p.m.

Op Sessions

A sign up sheet will be made during October. Those participating may email their requests for time on the layout. This is done to insure that we have enough operators to man the layout and that everyone is given an equal opportunity to run trains. Op Sessions will be broken into two hours slots, slots may be combined. We anticipate that there will be an opportunity for a minimum of five people to fully man the layout during the op sessions. Anticipated positions include a dispatcher, a clerk, yardmaster, crews for through trains and locals. The layout may be opperated by smaller crews, likewise the number of postitions may increase as the size of the layout is confirmed.

There should be plenty of opportunities for run time during the show. There will be a total of 21 hours of operations time available!

Private Op session - Dinner

In the past, the NMRA Division hosting the show has also hosted a BBQ dinner (burgers, dogs, chicken) after the show closes on Saturday. Utah Free-mo has enjoyed he BBQ and continue to operate the layout into the evening--inviting members from the other clubs participating in the show to operate and learn more about Free-mo. We have also headed over to home layouts to operate, such as Ted York's Layout based on Cajon Pass.

In addition to the dinner on Saturday, we are proposing that all the Free-Mo participants gather for a breakfast at a nearby restaurant (yet to be determined) for breakfast Sunday morning before the show opens. You will be responsible for paying for your meal, but it will provide a good time to discuss the show and the future of large multi-group setups. We will have more definite plans in the coming weeks.

Proposed Operating Style

Our current plans call for using a dispatcher to give verbal clearances via radio for train movements and track and time for locals operating on the mainline. We do not anticipate using track warrants. However, if sufficient interest is expressed we may use them during selected op sessions. We currently use a Switch List, hand written on a standard preprinted form, prepared by a clerk. To keep the paperwork and amount of preparation minimal, an industry list will be created before hand. The clerk prepares the switch list by randomly choosing industries for pickups and deliveries of cars. Cars are selected from the yard by the yard master. We have tested this system at several shows and have found that it works well.

DCC Conflicts

To help avoid addressing issues we are proposing a voluntary pre-registration of addresses. A simple system that we use is each person is assigned a two digit prefix. The last two digits of the locomotive number make up the remainder of a four digit address. Ninety-nine people can have ninety-nine locomotives without any conflicts. Programming can be done with confidence before participants arrive. If you are intersted in participating please request a prefix when you sign up to participate. Because this is voluntary, on site (off railroad) programming (possibly via computer) will be provided for those in need as conflicts arise.

Take Down

The show closes at 4:00 on Sunday. Take down normally moves very quickly. For those who may want to start their drive home Sunday evening modules can normally be quickly loaded, especially if you have your vehicle ready to load near a door. We have had some delays in the past waiting for an open door and the elevator. The delays could have been quickly solved if we had been a little less lazy.

Sign Up and Participate

Again, we feel that the ability to join or modules and groups together is one of the biggest advantages of Free-Mo. There have been some good examples of these setups already, but we have only begun to tap the potential of Free-Mo. It is out hope that this show will set a precedence and that all of us will begin to think, dream, and start planning on national and regional Free-Mo conventions. We hope that this page has answered you questions about the Wasatch Rails 2007. If you are interested in signing up or if you have additional questions please email the Run Chief for this event, Scott Gentry.
